Programming patchy particles to form three-dimensional dodecagonal quasicrystals

Model patchy particles have been shown to be able form a wide variety of structures, including symmetric clusters, complex crystals, and even two-dimensional quasicrystals. Here, we investigate whether can design that three-dimensional quasicrystals, in particular targeting quasicrystal with dodecagonal symmetry is made up stacks quasicrystalline layers. We obtain two designs are such annealing simulations. The first one-component system seven-patch but patches allow them adopt both seven- eight-coordinated environments. second ternary contains mixture eight-patch likely more realizable experiments, for example, using DNA origami. One interesting feature the resulting quasicrystals very often contain screw dislocation.
